Gay Guide: Jaipur

You already know India is more than the Taj Mahal and butter chicken.  But you may not be sure where to experience India at it’s finest. Our recommendation? Jaipur!

To this day, Jaipur is known as The Pink City, thanks to a fresh coat of paint the whole metropolis received before King Edward VII visited in 1876. Over 100 years later, the city still retains its rosy glow.

Where to eat

If you’re in India, you must try a curry, and there’s no better place than Niros to sop some up with fresh-baked roti.

For authentic Rajasthani fare, try Copper Chimney, then head to the hailed Laxmi Misthan Bhandar (LMB) for dessert. Both are touted by locals and tourists alike.

If you’re craving some western, head to Little Italy (the restaurant, not neighbourhood). The wood-fired pizzas are molte bene बहुत अच्छा!

What to do

Amer Fort is a given. The famed fortress demonstrates the power and importance of the Rajput. Give yourself at least four hours to explore this unique site overlooking beautiful Maoto Lake.

Back inside the Pink City, rickshaw your way to City Palace for a guided tour. If you’re visiting Jaipur with Out Adventures, we’ve negotiated a tour of the royal family’s personal chambers!

From here, make your way to Jantar Mantar (the observatory) and honeycombed Hawa Mahal. Afterwards, haggle with artisans at nearby Sireh Deori Bazaar.

Finally, snag the perfect panorama from the roof of Iswari Minar Swarga Sal.

Where to shop

While aforementioned Sireh Deori Bazaar is conveniently close to Hawa Mahal, it’s not the most buzz-worthy bazaar in the capital.

Johari Bazaar is a lively jeweller’s market. It’s well-known for Meenakari, the region’s famed jewellery involving intricate glazed enamel.

The best place to try on Rajasthan’s camel leather shoes (Mojari) is Bapu Bazaar. The market is especially beautiful, as its nestled between historic pink buildings on either side.

Finally, Nehru Bazaar is a one-stop-shop featuring myriad stands and stalls selling all sorts of wares and knick-knacks. Keep your eyes peeled for the beautiful blue pottery.
