In 2010, few could point out Slovenia on a map let alone name drop the Postjona Caves or Soca Valley. But in the past seven years, the former Yugoslavian country has risen as a top destination for culture and adventure seekers alike.
Scroll down to discover why this relatively unknown has become Europe’s It Girl.
Unimaginable Vistas
From emerald Lake Bled to snowy Mt. Triglav and even the glittering Adriatic Coast, Slovenia’s natural beauty is incomparable. Over 50 per cent of the country remains forested, earning it the world’s first ‘Green Destination’ certification. Even the stunning Goriška Brda wine region is picture perfect.
Inspired Food & Wine
Speaking of Goriška Brda, the region’s vintages may be hard to find internationally, but sommeliers regularly tout them as Old World’s MVPs. Further, Slovenian culinary culture found itself in the limelight in 2016 after Chef Ana Roš was the subject of the Netflix award winning series Chef’s Table. According to Travel & Leisure, “Slovenia has become one of the continent’s most intriguing places to eat and drink.”
Thrilling Activities
Beyond skiing the alps, Slovenia offers a slew of sensational activities for the adventure seeker: cycling, hiking, horseback riding and rafting to name a few. On our tour, we’ll spend two nights ‘glamping’ in the lush countryside, enjoying private wood burning hot tubs and roaring group bonfires. During the day we’ll schlep through forests, explore castles and take in some of those aforementioned vistas. We’ll also cycle Ljubljana Marshes.
A Cosmopolitan Capital
Ljubljana is the pièce de résistance. It’s name literally translates to “The Loved One”, and few could disagree. You’ll fall head over six-inch heel for the car-free city centre. Be sure to stroll or paddle along Ljubljana River which swerves through the entire city. Other sites and experiences: shop the open markets, explore Baroque churches, make your way to the Medieval castle and take in Ljubljana’s signature Art Nouveau architecture. If this all sounds too active, enjoy an afternoon people-watching at any number of boho cafes and quaint wine bars.
