New Machu Picchu Regulations!

Dear Prospective Peru Passengers,

In the interest of preserving Machu Picchu, local Peruvian Authorities enacted new regulations. The full list of regulations is available here but for the Coles Notes version, we compiled the most important bullets below.

1. You Can Only Enter Once

Machu Picchu entry tickets are only valid for a single entry meaning you can’t leave the site and re-enter at any time. If you wish to visit the site again, you’ll have to purchase a new ticket which will be subject to availability. It’s also important to note, your ticket is assigned ‘Morning’ or ‘Afternoon’ and you cannot enter outside of your chosen schedule:

• Morning shift: entry from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
• Afternoon shift: entry from 12 pm until 5.30 pm.

2. You Must Be Accompanied by a Guide

You can no longer explore the ruins on your own. You must be accompanied by an authorized Machu Picchu Guide at all times.

3. Choose Your Own Circuit

Three ‘circuits’ have been designed for visitors. Your Machu Picchu Guide will walk you along one of the circuits while regaling you with the history of this fascinating World Heritage Site. Please note: after beginning the circuit, visitors can’t backtrack or change circuits. Further, upon completion, you must immediately leave the site — as mentioned, no one can explore the ruins on their own.

If You’re Joining Out Adventures in Peru

It’s important to note that travellers joining an Out Adventures’ tour of Machu Picchu won’t get to choose their own circuit. We’ve prearranged the circuit in order to best mirror our itinerary.

Also, after our travellers enjoy touring the UNESCO World Heritage Site, we’ll head to the upper area of Machu Picchu which will include visits to the Inka Bridge and the Sun Gate. We’ll take our time photographing this incredible site from unique vantages and perspectives. Your tour leader may even have a few more interesting stories to share before we wrap up this once in a lifetime experience.

While it’s unfortunate we can no longer meander the ruins on our own, we strongly believe these regulations will help preserve the citadel for future generations.
